The UK Government has a target to plant 30,000 hectares of new woodland per year by 2025. This target brings several challenges and questions, for example: (1) should tree planting be the central approach employed for woodland creation? (2) How can we collect evidence to inform woodland creation policy and assess the success of new woodland projects? (3) How can we maximise the land available for woodland creation by designing woodlands that work alongside other stakeholder priorities?
Sara King will first address the role of rewilding as a method for promoting woodland creation. Dr Lindsay Maskell will discuss the Welsh Government’s Environment and Rural Affairs Monitoring and Modelling Programme (ERAMMP) and its role in guiding evidence-based decisions for woodland creation and management.
Everyone is welcome to join, attendance is free. This special webinar is a warm-up event to this year’s ialeUK PGR and Early Career workshop where students and early career researchers/practitioners will have the opportunity to visit several tree planting sites in South Wales. Find out more here.
The webinar will be Monday 12th June 2023, 14:00-15:00 BST via zoom. Register here.
