First messages of the UK National Ecosystem Assessment

The first messages from the UK National Ecosystem Assessment have been published, highlighting the value of nature both to our society and the economy. Three documents have been published: ‘What nature can do for you’, which provides a practical introduction to making the most of natural services, assets and resources in policy and decision making; ‘Towards a deeper understanding of nature’s value’, which encourages an interdisciplinary approach towards evidence about the value of the natural environment; and ‘Payments for Ecosystem Services’, a short introduction. Initial findings of the study highlight significant changes in the last 60 years, such as: real improvements in air and water quality over the last few decades; increased recognition of the emotional and physical health benefits of access to green space; and much more food from UK farmland.
